Smartsteuer

Smartsteuer is a Hannover-based online tax filing service launched in 2010 and now part of the German Lexware/Haufe Group. It guides employees, self-employed people, students and pensioners through their annual German income tax return in the browser, with automatic plausibility checks, step-by-step prompts and direct ELSTER submission. Up to five returns can be filed per year on one account, useful for families. The 2026 flat price is €34.99/year regardless of how many returns are submitted. Users can also retrieve their tax assessment notices online.
