About Coqui

Coqui was a Berlin-based generative-speech startup founded in 2021 by former Mozilla engineers Eren Gölge, Josh Meyer, Kelly Davis and Reuben Morais, raising USD 3.3M in seed funding before shutting down its commercial Coqui Studio and API in late 2023/early 2024. Its open-source toolkit Coqui TTS and the XTTS-v2 model remain freely available on GitHub and Hugging Face, supporting 17 languages, voice cloning from roughly six seconds of audio, cross-lingual cloning and emotion/style transfer for on-prem and commercial use. Maintenance now happens through community forks rather than the original company.
